The U. S. Food and Drug Administration today approved an over-the-counter alternative to esomeprazole magnesium as a treatment for a rare disease called esophagitis. The new drug is called Nexium, for short.
Nexium is an acid-suppressing drug and works by decreasing stomach acid production, which is a major factor in esophageal cancer development.

They were also told that they were at a higher risk of developing ulcers and other complications that could cause death.
This was not the first time a drug has been linked to an adverse reaction. In 2013, a small group of people were diagnosed with serious gastrointestinal problems caused by Nexium and other drugs. They were also told that they were at a higher risk of developing stomach and intestinal problems.
According to the FDA, there was “no evidence that these medications have caused these adverse reactions.”
The FDA said that in 2013 it received a letter from the agency’s Office of Dietary Supplements (ASDP) indicating that the “risk of serious adverse events associated with these prescription medications may be low.” The ASDP letter was signed by the FDA’s Director, Dr. David M. Geraghty.
“The risk is very low,” the letter reads.
These individuals were asked to voluntarily comply with the warning by taking the medication for at least three months. The drug was not listed on the label. They should be monitored for the development of serious adverse reactions.
The agency said the risk is low, as the drug has been listed in the manufacturer’s patient information leaflet for more than a year.
